If your Twitter (now X) account is hacked, strange tweets may be posted or DMs sent without your knowledge. Take swift action to recover your account and strengthen your security.

Signs Your Account May Be Hacked

- Tweets or retweets you did not post - Accounts being followed that you did not follow - Your password has been changed - Your email or phone number has been altered - Unusual DMs being sent automatically - "Logged in from this device" notifications from unknown devices

Immediate Steps to Take

If you can still log in: 1. Go to Settings > Account > Change Password (use a strong password) 2. Go to Settings > Security and Account Access > Apps and Sessions 3. Revoke permissions for any suspicious connected apps 4. Log out of all sessions (except your own device) 5. Enable two-factor authentication If you cannot log in: 1. Go to twitter.com 2. Click "Forgot password?" 3. Enter the email address or phone number used at sign-up 4. Receive the verification code and reset your password

If Your Email or Phone Number Has Also Been Changed

1. Go to help.twitter.com 2. Report a "Hacked Account" 3. Provide as much account information as possible: - Username (@handle) - Email address or phone number used at sign-up - Recent account activity 4. Submit a government-issued ID or identity verification document 5. Wait for a response from Twitter Support (1–3 days) * If no response, submit the request multiple times

Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication (Required)

1. Go to Settings > Security and Account Access 2. Select Security > Two-Factor Authentication 3. Choose an authentication method: - Text message (SMS) - Authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy) - Security key (physical key) 4. Save your backup codes (print them or store them somewhere safe) * Authenticator app method is the most secure

How to Prevent Getting Hacked

- Password: at least 12 characters, including numbers and special characters - Use a different password from other websites - Do not click on suspicious links - Verify the Twitter login page URL (beware of phishing) - Avoid logging in on public Wi-Fi - Regularly review and clean up connected apps - Use a password manager (1Password, Bitwarden)

Additional Tips

  • Post an apology tweet to all your followers after being hacked
  • Consider subscribing to Twitter Blue (paid) for important accounts to enhance security
  • Enable two-factor authentication on your email account as well
  • Delete any tweets left by the hacker and notify your followers
