How to Recover Your Twitter (X) Account After Being Hacked
A guide on how to quickly recover your Twitter (X) account after it has been hacked and prevent further damage.

Signs Your Account May Be Hacked
- Tweets or retweets you did not post
- Accounts being followed that you did not follow
- Your password has been changed
- Your email or phone number has been altered
- Unusual DMs being sent automatically
- "Logged in from this device" notifications from unknown devices
Immediate Steps to Take
If you can still log in:
1. Go to Settings > Account > Change Password (use a strong password)
2. Go to Settings > Security and Account Access > Apps and Sessions
3. Revoke permissions for any suspicious connected apps
4. Log out of all sessions (except your own device)
5. Enable two-factor authentication
If you cannot log in:
1. Go to twitter.com
2. Click "Forgot password?"
3. Enter the email address or phone number used at sign-up
4. Receive the verification code and reset your password
If Your Email or Phone Number Has Also Been Changed
1. Go to help.twitter.com
2. Report a "Hacked Account"
3. Provide as much account information as possible:
- Username (@handle)
- Email address or phone number used at sign-up
- Recent account activity
4. Submit a government-issued ID or identity verification document
5. Wait for a response from Twitter Support (1–3 days)
* If no response, submit the request multiple times
Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication (Required)
1. Go to Settings > Security and Account Access
2. Select Security > Two-Factor Authentication
3. Choose an authentication method:
- Text message (SMS)
- Authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy)
- Security key (physical key)
4. Save your backup codes (print them or store them somewhere safe)

How to Prevent Getting Hacked
- Password: at least 12 characters, including numbers and special characters
- Use a different password from other websites
- Do not click on suspicious links
- Verify the Twitter login page URL (beware of phishing)
- Avoid logging in on public Wi-Fi
- Regularly review and clean up connected apps
- Use a password manager (1Password, Bitwarden)
